A Recipe for Success in the Food and Beverage Industry

By Chef Norma Llop

In the summer of 2011 a successful group of women judges at the Cattlemen’s BBQ Cook-Out (shown in photo) found themselves engaged in an in depth discussion about how to be successful in the food and beverage industry. This group of diverse women consisted of food writers, chefs, public relation professionals/publishers and event planners. After reflecting on their respective career successes and failures these women found similarities throughout their journey, and wanted to share with the readers of foodiespr.com what they consider to be a recipe for success in the food and beverage industry.

The following list is advice on how to achieve personal and professional success…

1. Set Goals

Successful people set both short term goals and long term goals with specific completion dates. Write these goals down and even mark them on a calendar as a reminder to stay focused and gage whether or not you are on track.

2. Get Started

Successful people start immediately. They do not drag their feet or put off their goals. They take action and seize opportunity, because they understand the power of momentum. You may not achieve all your goals at once, so stay focused and continue to take appropriate steps towards your goals to head yourself in the right direction.

3. Think Positive and Have Confidence

There are two ways of looking at life: half-empty or half-full. Successful people are optimistic and believe the glass is always half full. A positive outlook and confidence in your abilities will help you reach milestones. Many successful people believe in goal visualization, meaning they visualize the success that will come after reaching their goals in order to keep themselves motivated and thinking positive.

4. Take Action

Those who are successful take action, even when the path is not clear. They have the ability to recognize opportunity sometimes in the most unlikely of places. Too many people wait around until they think they have all the answers. But if you do that, you may wait forever. “Analysis Paralysis” is scary, and a lot of people experience it. Successful people don’t proceed blindly, but understand some, not all, details are necessary to make decisions and proceed forward towards success.

5. Be Determined

It is said that in war, plans go out the window as soon as the first bullet flies. There are so many variables in life that it is impossible to plan every detailed step, or predict how things will turn out. You don’t know what will happen once you take the first step, so the only constants are the end vision and your determination to get there, even if the path doesn’t unfold exactly as you envisioned.

6. Attract It

Many people use the law of attraction to become successful. This means having a clear vision of what you want, and believing positive thinking brings about positive physical results. Your thoughts can draw success to you. What we think about most, we notice most, and others will notice too. When you buy that new blue car, you suddenly notice how many people are looking for or buying that same item. Your thinking and doing attracts others of the same mentality.
